March Spotlight: National Horticultural Therapy Week

Dear SoWhat Studios Community,

March is a significant month at SoWhat Studios, as it is dedicated to celebrating both National Horticultural Therapy Week and Women's History Month. During this time, we honor the invaluable contributions of women throughout history and in our present-day lives.

Horticultural Therapy has ancient roots, with gardens long revered as spaces for healing. However, its formal practice began in the 19th century, notably with Dr. Benjamin Rush, who observed gardening's positive impact on mental health. Throughout the 20th century, pioneers like Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and Dr. William Menninger further developed and popularized horticultural therapy. Today, it's recognized as a legitimate therapy, supported by empirical evidence for its benefits. With advancements in research and technology, horticultural therapy has expanded into hospitals, schools, and community gardens, promoting well-being and resilience through a deep connection with nature.

This month, we also celebrate the spring solstice, also known as the vernal equinox, marking the official start of spring. It signifies longer days and warmer temperatures as the sun crosses the celestial equator. Historically, this event has held profound significance in gardening and agriculture, symbolizing renewal and fertility across ancient cultures. For gardeners, the spring solstice signals the beginning of the growing season, inspiring soil preparation, seed sowing, and nurturing new life. It's a time of hope and anticipation as gardens burst forth with vibrant colors and abundant harvests. Moreover, the onset of spring is increasingly recognized for its positive impact on mental health, with longer days and increased sunlight alleviating symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Gardening activities associated with the spring equinox promote well-being, reduce stress, and improve overall mental health, highlighting the profound connection between nature and well-being. Thus, the spring solstice serves as a reminder of the renewal and revitalization of the mind, body, and spirit through our connection with nature.

In celebration of National Horticultural Therapy Week in 2024, let's come together to honor the transformative power of nature in promoting wellness and healing. This week provides an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of horticultural therapists and practitioners who work tirelessly to improve the lives of individuals through gardening and plant-based interventions. Whether it's tending to a community garden, participating in therapeutic horticulture sessions, or simply spending time outdoors surrounded by greenery, let's embrace the restorative benefits of connecting with nature. Join us in commemorating National Horticultural Therapy Week by engaging in activities that nourish the body, mind, and soul, and by advocating for greater access to horticultural therapy services for all. Together, let's cultivate growth, resilience, and joy through the power of plants.
